Public Safety Building evacuated over suspicious package

(Oregon State Police)

Newberg, Ore (NWNN) – The Oregon State Patrol bomb squad was called out to a building in Newberg Tuesday morning after a suspicious package scare.

Police say around 5:00 p.m. a man walked into the Public Safety building with a backpack, but ended up intentionally leaving without it. They say he spent about 45 seconds walking around, but didn’t speak with anyone.

Once the man left the building dispatchers called officers who started searching the area for the man, but weren’t able to find him.

With multiple incidents in the last few months on law enforcement, the incident was considered a possible threat. Businesses in the area were evacuated and the building locked down.

It took 2 hours for members of the OSP bomb squad to determine the backpack was not a safety threat.

No word yet on what was in the backpack or the identity of the man.
